The One Saturday When Germantown's Farm And Arts Calendars Actually Line Up

On August 8, three local event calendars were set to overlap in Germantown: Butler's Orchard's Sunflower Spectacular was scheduled to open that morning, the first of two Sunset Social farm nights was scheduled for that evening, and BlackRock Center for the Arts was set to hold its monthly Artisan Market on the same date. The overlap brought together two organizations' calendars, and understanding the pattern can help you recognize the next time it happens.

Butler's Orchard's Sunflower Spectacular runs August 8 through 16, closed on the Monday in between, with regular hours from 8:30am to 6pm and last entry an hour before close. On the two Saturdays inside that window, August 8 and August 15, the farm stays open until 8:30pm for Sunset Socials, which pair the sunflower fields with live music from local bands and local cider, beer and wine service in the Farm Park. BlackRock's Artisan Market runs on a fixed rule of its own: the second Saturday of every month, all year, vendors selling handmade jewelry, candles and crafts on the Town Center campus. This year those two rules happened to overlap on their first date. They will not necessarily overlap the same way next year, because one calendar is set by a farm's bloom timing and the other is set by a fixed day-of-week rule that has nothing to do with flowers.

Admission runs $8 per person online or $10 at the gate on weekdays, and $13.50 online or $15 at the gate Friday through Sunday, with children under 24 months free. That weekday-versus-weekend spread is $5 per adult at the gate and $5.50 online, which adds up fast for a family of four choosing between a Tuesday afternoon and a Saturday evening.

The Wing Shop Used To Be a Bike Shop

While the farm and the arts center have been running their separate calendars, the retail strips along Wisteria Drive, Frederick Road and Middlebrook Road have quietly turned over almost entirely, and the pattern in what replaced what tells you something about how this town actually eats.

• Hinzi's opened at 13015 Wisteria Drive, in the space that used to be Mangino's. The concept, founded by Hina Awan, first opened in 2024 on North East Street in Frederick and blends Pakistani-inspired flavors with Mediterranean influences, built around customizable rice bowls and kati rolls.
• Biryani Grill is coming to 13038 Middlebrook Road in the Germantown Commons shopping center, taking over the former Cafe Hong Kong space. The restaurant already runs locations in Aldie, Ashburn and Chantilly, Virginia, and centers its Germantown menu on traditional biryanis and tandoor dishes.
• America's Best Wings opened at 12619-L Wisteria Drive in Germantown Square, in the space most recently occupied by Three Point Cycles. That is not a restaurant-to-restaurant swap. A bicycle shop became a wing shop, which tells you something about what kind of retail this corridor can currently support.
• Sakura Go is coming to 20940-B Frederick Road in the Neelsville Village Center, in the former home of BGR, Burgers Grilled Right, which closed in January 2026. The new concept blends Japanese and Vietnamese menus, offering hibachi, poke bowls and pho from a company that already operates in Clinton and Kettering, Maryland.
• Kusshi Sushi has posted "coming soon" signage at 19833 Century Boulevard, in the former Zane Japanese Eatery space. If it opens, it will be the chain's ninth location in the region, following its original Bethesda storefront.

None of these are net-new buildings. Every one of them is a tenant swap inside an existing shopping center footprint, which means the actual retail geography of Germantown has not expanded this year, it has just re-sorted itself. A bike shop became a wing counter. The former burger place is slated to become a hibachi-and-pho counter. The former Hong Kong-style spot is slated to become an Indian biryani kitchen. These are tenant changes within existing shopping centers, and the current wave leans heavily toward independent, immigrant-owned kitchens rather than chain expansion.

Why This Matters More Than a Restaurant List

For residents following local changes, restaurant tenants change within Germantown's retail spaces, while Butler's Orchard and BlackRock Center for the Arts run on separate schedules. Their events aligned on August 8; most Saturdays do not bring both together.

Looking Ahead to August 15

The August 15 Sunset Social is scheduled to run until 8:30pm at Butler's Orchard, with live music and drinks in the Farm Park alongside the sunflower fields.
