A North Potomac Summer Weekend, From Traville To The Towpath

Half the map calls it Rockville, the mail calls it North Potomac, and the shopping center where you buy your Giant groceries technically belongs to a Traville Gateway Drive address that sits next to the first Cava Mezze restaurant and a signalized cut onto Shady Grove Road. Most residents drive the same three-mile triangle every weekend without noticing how much of it changed this spring.
This is not a roundup. It is a case for treating the Traville-to-towpath corridor as one connected weekend, because a new restaurant, a nine-mile trail, and a Kentlands events calendar are all sitting inside a two-mile radius of the same parking lot.
The story most neighbors missed is at 9755 Traville Gateway Drive. El Patio, the family-owned Argentine restaurant that has anchored Rockville since 2001, quietly fired up a second grill at Traville Village Center, taking over the former Nantucket's Reef space. Regulars can expect the same empanadas, milanesas and family-style parrillada platters, now a shorter drive for North Potomac neighbors. The back-of-house market is stocked with Argentine pantry staples and pastries, which is the part that matters if you already have a Giant loyalty card and are looking for a reason to walk two doors down before you head home.
Why this matters for the weekend rhythm: Traville has been the same lineup for years. The current tenant mix runs Bageltowne Deli, bb.q Chicken, Black Lion Cafe, Cava Mezze, Klay Healthy Indian, Oriental Cafe, Potomac Beer & Wine, Potomac Pizza and Sushi Oishii on the food side, with Anytime Fitness, Giant, Mattress Warehouse, Crest Dry Cleaners, Traville Barber Shop, the UPS Store, Kumon, Nanda Learning Center and Total Access Pediatric Urgent Care filling in the rest. That is a functional list, not a destination list. El Patio moving in is the first time in a while the center has a place people will drive to on purpose from Kentlands or Fallsgrove.
Ask ten North Potomac residents where the Muddy Branch trailhead is and eight will point vaguely toward the stream behind their subdivision. The full trail is longer and wilder than most people realize. The 9 miles of natural surface trail traverse rocky upland forest, streambanks and meadows, pass by rich vernal pools and earthen mill remnants, run past The Potomac Horse Center on the way from Darnestown Road down to historic Blockhouse Point Conservation Park, and connect over a bridge to Pennyfield Lock on the C&O Canal.
If you have only ever done the flat neighborhood spur, the section people miss is the piece that starts in North Potomac proper. The third segment picks up on the south side of Darnestown Road, at which point you have crossed from Gaithersburg into North Potomac. The trailhead is off of American Way, but there are two such roads spurring off of Darnestown. Ignore the first one, which heads into a T-intersection. Take the second, a tiny dead end where you simply park and hit the trail. From the other direction, the trailhead near the intersection of Turkey Foot Road and Query Mill Road is the one families use for shorter out-and-backs.

One warning worth passing along: reviewers highlight beautiful spring foliage and diverse wildlife but mention trash near roads and unpleasant odors from sewage lines, and recommend going early for a quieter experience. Early is not a suggestion in July. It is the whole strategy.
The reason to treat this as a single corridor and not three separate errands is that Kentlands, Traville Village, and the Muddy Branch access points all sit inside a tight radius. The other shift worth watching is south of you, at Potomac Village. Italian restaurant Maurizio's is expected to launch this summer in Potomac with a July or August opening, at 10120 River Road in the former space of Renato's, the long-running Italian anchor at the Potomac Place shopping center. It comes from a team with a Rockville and Pike & Rose track record: the full-service restaurant is the next concept from the team behind Cava Mezze in Rockville and Julii, Melina and Bouboulina in North Bethesda's Pike & Rose. If Traville's El Patio and Cava Mezze are your weeknight rotation, Maurizio's is the "we're doing something nicer for a birthday" option that does not require a drive to Bethesda.
Between the two openings, North Potomac residents are ending the summer with two new grill-forward, chef-driven options within fifteen minutes of home. That has not been true for a while.
